On a blustery cold day in December, Lee's Little Learners celebrated "Cookies with Santa" at the playgroup that was held just prior to the winter break. Children and their parents had the opportunity to decorate Christmas cookies, create Christmas trees, paint candy cane shapes, play music with jingle bells and hear some wonderful holiday stories.
In January, a playgroup was held that celebrated the Hispanic culture. The children and their families played loteria, made bean tacquitos, drank Jarritos and danced to La Bamba. We focused on the meat and protein group of the food pyramid.
Another playgroup was held which encouraged learning about healthy eating and the food pyramid. The children and their families concentrated on eating foods that were the colors of the rainbow. We made fresh fruit salad and had the opporutnity to add chili powder or sugar to their fruit. We also discussed the texture of the many fruits and described the fruits as we ate them.
In February, at storytime, we read A Pair of Socks by Stuart J. Murphy and illustrated by Lois Ehlert. We talked about pairs. We have a pair of hands, ears, eyes and feet. We then played a matching Dominoes game and a matching concentration game.
Dinosaurs
We learned so much about one of our favorite extinct animals - the dinosaur. We talked about carnivores (meat eaters) and herbivores (plant eaters). Parents and children were able to practice math skills such as sorting by color, sequencing numbers one to ten and learning spatial relations. We also had great fun dancing to the Stephanie Burton song Dinosaurs.
Bang, Bang, Bang! Lee's Little Learners first playgroup in March was all about tools. Children explored tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, safety galsses and flashlights. The children also made structures with PVC pipes and pegs.
Bears This playgroup was all about bears! We read a story about bears called "It's the Bear!" by Jez Alborough, stamped bear paw prints with paint and decorated paper bears using buttons, puff balls, sticker eyes and feathers. It was also exciting to learn about bears by reading about them with parents in ZooBooks. Making a bear cave and pretending to bears rounded out our group. Both parents and children enjoyed themselves and learned more about bears and the way that they live.
YMCA In March, Ms. Aly fromthe YMCA came to our school to talk to children and their parents about healthy mealtime habits. The children decorated mealtime placemats with crayons and markers while their parents discussed family meals and routines. After, we had a healthy snack. We hope to visit the YMCA again in April.
To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the children and their parents had a green-filled day! The children glued green glitter on shamrocks, made green slime and listened to a St. Patrick's Day-themed story.
Cat in the Hat On March 19, in celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, we had a special Cat in the Hat playgroup. Children had fun constructing hats similar to those that the famous cat wore, coloring Dr. Seuss coloring pages and exploring letters and words. We had a special treat and made green eggs!
