Reuben L. Young Teacher and Principal 1926-67 Appointed to teach stenography and typing in 1926; promoted to high school principal in 1929 where he served thirty-eight years; served as chairman of the first O-K Conference organizational meeting and was instrumental in the founding of the conference; described by students as always understanding and ready to help, he led the high school through several major expansion and construction projects; in 1944, he was appointed interim superintendent for the second half of the school year.

Robert W. Schellenberg, Sr. Class of 1939 Valedictorian of his class, he went on to graduate from the University of Michigan and serve as a U.S. Navy commissioned officer during World War II; a certified public accountant, he was a member of the Godfrey-Lee school board for twenty-two years and served as Kent County commissioner for the ninth district; active on many area boards and commissions, he was president of the Lee Rotary Club, a member of the Board of Trustees of Hope College, and adjunct professor at Hope and Grand Valley State University.

Jelt Sietsema Class of 1939 Elected to represent the 94th District in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1969 to 1986, where he served as chairman of the Public Safety and Public Health committees; excelled in high school as pitcher and captain of the 1939 baseball team; following graduation, served three years in the U.S. Army, and saw duty in Europe during World War II; returned to the Wyoming area following the war and worked for a number of years at a local fabrication plant before election to the state house.

1940 Football Team

Grand Valley Champions

The 1940 football team finished the season unbeaten and unscored upon, having defeated North Muskegon, Rockford, Grandville, Lowell, Sparta, Greenville, Godwin and Wyoming, ending with a 0-0 tie against East Grand Rapids.

Harold Sabin Teacher, Coach, Counselor 1944-1973 Appointed to teach physical education, he served as varsity football coach (1944-59), varsity basketball coach (1944-52), varsity track coach (1945-62), the school’s first athletic director (1952-73), and the first guidance counselor (1962-73); three of his football teams won or tied for the Grand Valley championship and three track teams won regional titles; instrumental in construction of the gym in 1952 and establishment of the O-K Conference in 1958; elected to the Michigan State Coaches Hall of Fame.

John Jeltes Class of 1954 Four-year member of the varsity club, and captain of the tennis team where he won back-to-back state championships in 1953 and 54; active in student government four-year member of the band, football and basketball teams, and other student clubs; graduate of Hope College where he was named captain of the 1956 tennis team; went on to a career as teacher, coach, athletic director, and eventually superintendent of Kentwood Public Schools, the second largest school district in Kent County.

Thomas Thompson Class of 1959, Teacher, and Coach Four-year letter winner in baseball, three in football, and three in basketball including the 1959 regional champion team; served as captain in all three sports; senior class president and first-ever homecoming king at Lee; president of the Varsity Club and National Honor Society; graduate of Western Michigan University and teacher at Lee High School from 1963 to 1994; coaching included twenty-nine seasons of baseball, ten seasons of football, twenty-one seasons of boys basketball and ten seasons of girls basketball.

Art Kraai Teacher and Coach 1963-95 Coached the boy’s cross country teams to state championships in 1971, 1972 and 1978 and runner-up in 1975; his girl’s team was state champion in 1981 and runner-up in 1982; his 1970’s boys’ teams were named Team of the Decade and he earned Coach of the Year honors in 1978; his teams won eleven league and fifteen regional championships; served as manager of six different cross country state finals meets; winner of the 2006 MITCA Ambrose Award and inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007; a graduate of Calvin College and Western Michigan University, he taught English and social studies while also coaching track and basketball.

Thomas Nauta Class of 1966 Member of the National Honor Society and Student Council; earned all-state honors in football, basketball and track; earned all-conference and all-area honors in baseball; graduate of Central Michigan University and masters from Western Michigan University; taught for Grandville Public Schools for 34 years where he coached baseball, football and basketball; served as a sports official at the high school and collegiate level; member of the Michigan Softball and Touch Football halls of fame; selected to the touch football All-American Team.

Betty Lark Secretary 1972-99 High school secretary and mother of five Lee students; described by many as kind-hearted, sweet, and caring; served many principals during her tenure with efficiency and trustworthiness; a good listener, she also know what advice to give and when to give it; she supported her students without coddling them, and upon her retirement, her biggest concern was finding a replacement who would take good care of her staff; parents of high school students could always depend on her wise words.

Deborah Traxinger Class of 1978 Co-valedictorian of the Class of 1978 and graduate of Michigan State University where she played basketball for four years, was selected to the All-Big Ten squad, and held the assist record; recognized as the top female athlete at Lee High School and selected to the national Parade Magazine All-American basketball team for 1978, having earned all-conference and all-state honors along the way; also earned all-conference honors in volleyball and softball; went on to teach physical education at Grand Ledge High School.

Randall J. Lark Class of 1979 Co-captain of the 1978 varsity football team where he earned all-conference honors as a running back and defensive tackle, selection to The Grand Rapids Press all-area team, and Detroit Free Press all-state team; graduate of Michigan State University and three-year starter for the Spartan football team; athletic director for Alma High School.

Frank "Stubby" Overmire Class of 1937 Captain and pitcher for the 1937 Grand Valley League and West Michigan championship baseball team; pitched for the Western Michigan Teachers College Bronco baseball team from 1937-41; member of the Detroit Tigers from 1943-49 where he pitched the third game of the 1945 World Series; also pitched for the St. Louis Browns and New York Yankees; served as minor league manager, coach, scout, and pitching instructor for the Detroit Tigers from 1952-77; the Lee High School baseball field was dedicated in his honor on April 25, 2005.

John H. Rose Class of 1949 Participated in band, football, basketball, baseball and a number of other clubs; military service during the Korean War; a lifelong resident of the community, he owned and operated Rose’s Shoe Store from 1955 to 1993, first established by his father in 1924; he served on the Godfrey-Lee Board of Education from 1966 to 1978, and has always been a faithful supporter of Lee High School.

Robert N. DeYoung Class of 1952 An all-conference and all-state football player as well as all-conference and top scorer in basketball for the old Grand Valley League, he went on to graduate from Hope College and served many years first as a high school teacher and coach, and later as a college administrator, including Vice President for College Advancement at Hope; past president for the Holland Chamber of Commerce where he earned the distinguished service award, and recognized as one of Hope College’s distinguished alumni where the DeVos Fieldhouse volleyball gymnasium is named in his honor.

Simon Jeltes Head Custodian & Maintenance Supervisor 1953-73 Much more than a custodian, he was know throughout the district as "Mr. Fix-it" and "Mr. Reliable;" aside from his daily duties, he was always there to support the athletic programs, drove the bus for away games and field trips, built and maintained the old ice skating rink behind school, and was a friend and helper to the entire school community; highly respected by the student body, the 1969 Echo yearbook was dedicated to him and the annual award for the female athlete of the year is named in his honor; upon his untimely death in 1974, the superintendent cancelled afternoon classes so staff and students could attend the funeral of this beloved individual.

Terry Rice Teacher, Coach, Athletic Director 1963-2004 Hired as a history teacher and coach in 1963, he took over a struggling basketball program and turned it into a perennial competitive team earning five conference championships and nine district titles, often against schools much larger than Lee; coached junior varsity football and golf, and spent several years serving as athletic director; considered by staff, alumni and former players alike to have been one of the greatest role models on the athletic field as well as in the classroom in the history of Lee High School.

Stephanie Leonardos President & CEO, Amerikam An avid supporter of education, providing financial support for Godfrey-Lee Public Schools including the 150th anniversary community celebration in 2007; under her leadership, Amerikam has been a foundation of this community, sponsoring a number of local programs and providing support to local veterans organizations.

Pat Cook Class of 1933 Known as Emajean VanderSluis, following graduation she worked as a teller and secretary in local businesses until she married Peter C. Cook in 1940; a devoted wife and mother, she served on the board of the Welcome Home for the Blind, the Blodgett Hospital Guild, and the Porter Hills Auxiliary; together with her husband, she lived a life notable for her initiative and active participation in many philanthropic gifts to their church, West Michigan schools and colleges including Grand Valley State University, Hope College, and Davenport University, as well as many medical, artistic and benevolent causes in the community.

Ms. Loralee (Lorie) Norden 

Class of 1970 

A "Rebel for Life," having attended Godfrey and Lee from kindergarten through graduation, Lorie was a particularly active and ambitious student at Lee, serving at times and in various leadership capacities in Future Teachers of America, National Honor Society, Band, Pep Band, Latin Club, Pep Club, Ski Club, G.A.A., and as senior class secretary. She also worked on the Ariel student newspaper and was senior editor of the Echo yearbook. After graduating with honors, Lori attended Hope College and returned to Lee High School in 1976 where she began a 31-year career as a physical education instructor and coach. At one point, she also taught science. Retiring in 2007, Lorie left Lee as one of its most successful coaches and bedrock for the girls' athletic program. Under her tutelage, the softball program saw three district championships, two regional championships, were Class C state runners-up in 1981, and returned to the state semi-finals in 1982. Her 1984 volleyball squad won the district championship. In all, Lorie provided leadership for girls' athletics that spanned fifteen years as softball coach, ten years coaching volleyball, and seven years with the junior varsity basketball team. Beyond that, Lorie was a mainstay at supervising track and field competitions and other athletic events.

Cornelius and Patsy DeLaat (posthumous) 

Active supporters and fans of Lee High School for more than forty years, Cornie and Patsy set a high standard for themselves and those that follow. Everywhere a Rebel team went, the DeLaats were sure to be there. They established a reputation of going out of their way to do whatever was needed for a student, teacher, administrator, coach, athlete or team. Cornie and Patsy could often be found filling the role of parents to many student athletes over the years, providing financial, emotional, and intellectual support to many. Even many years after their own four children graduated from Lee High School, they could be counted on for continual support to the school and community. Cornie served the area as a city employee and both were active members of Eighth Reformed Church. Patsy volunteered as a Kids Hope mentor at the Early Childhood Center and could be seen regularly working with area students through the Very Exciting Bible School program. Patsy graduated from Lee High School as a member of the Class of 1956.

Dr. Bernard Eisenga 

Class of 1970

A member of the National Honor Society, Varsity Club president, and four-year letterman in Cross Country, Dr. Eisenga attended Calvin College where he majored in pre-med before earning his advance degree in pharmacology from the Louisiana State University Medical Center in 1989, graduating first in his class. Four years later, he completed a medical degree at that same university, where he was recognized as the first student in the history of the university to that time graduating with a perfect 4.0, and received a number of prestigious awards and recognition. In 1993, Dr. Eisenga became medical director for the Spectrum Health Poison Center and held that position until budget cuts closed the center this past summer. He is continuing his role as a Spectrum Health physician.
